about

In an era of music defined by commercial recordings we are pleased to draw on the power of music in its social context. These pieces were recorded live at ceremonies in Munduk village in north Bali, Indonesia.

Angklung are typically called for during cremation ceremonies, setting up at the house of the deceased, processing sometimes with cengceng cymbals to the cremation site, stopping at Pura Dalem and sometimes even turning back to the house.

The first seven tracks feature Munduk Banjar Pasut's Angklung Dharma Yadnya. The rest of the pieces were recorded during a 14-day ngaben palabon, deca-annual cremation ceremony for which Pak Terip's Arya clan travels from all over the world to attend. They start with three pensive Gending Adeng from Munduk's own Sekaa Giri Kusuma. I Made Terip's seven-key angklung performed by musicians of Dencarik village rounds off the album with traditional four-key repertoire as well as that using the full range of its pentatonic instruments.

See PDF for complete liner notes.

Enjoy the sliding scale to fit your budget. If you make $50k please give $20. All proceeds go to the artists.

If you like this album, watch for the upcoming release of Balinese Angklung in Central Sulawesi, a showcase of repertoire for 8-key angklung.
